Where Was God When I Got Cancer?

By Dr. Mel Glazer Last week I received a phone call from someone whose father had died. The mom had died not too long ago, after several years of struggling with cancer. She used to be a regular shul attendee, but had stopped coming because she was angry at God. She felt God had deserted her, had stopped taking care of her, and so she was going to stop visiting God in shul. The son and I had a long and very fruitful chat about all this. When I suggested to him that her anger at God was a perfectly normal reaction, he was surprised. He thought that most folks maintain their faith in God, no matter what. I believe that is not the case, but rather that most of us have a rather fluid faith system-when things are good, we believe; and when things are not so good, we do not. When we were infants, everyone else took care of us-our parents, our older siblings, our family members and our doctors. We had to make no decisions on our own, our lives were in the capable hands of others. It was only as we grew up and older that we realized that we ourselves had to take on the responsibility for living our own lives and making our own decisions. No longer could we depend on others to keep us safe. Now, we were the main actors in our lives. All that is fine and normal, until death or illness enters our life. When that happens, we find ourselves wanting to return to the years of our childhood, we want to again rely on others to make us well, to return us to life. When our doctors and caregivers, in whom we place so much hope, do help, we feel safe again; but when they cannot turn away illness and sickness, we become angry. We know that they are but mortal human beings, doing the best they can. And we know that sometimes the human body has its own agenda, which no one can change. Still, we are angry. Sometimes the anger is directed at God, whom we would like to believe can do anything, even cure diseases which have no cure. Our heads know the truth, it is our hearts which break when pain overwhelms us. The anger is normal, but it is not truly anger. It is fear that we feel. When we have to change the way we have lived for so many years; when we become homebound or when we need our bedpans and walkers, when we have to depend on dialysis and adult diapers; when we spend too much time on the ICU floors and we begin to realize with certainty that our lives are coming to their end, we are scared. That fear comes out as anger, but the anger we feel is the fear that we will not be able to enjoy life as we used to. We are afraid that death is coming closer which each passing day. I would claim theologically (and you are certainly entitled to disagree) that it is only when we are fearful that God can come into our lives. From joy we might gain happiness and satisfaction, but from pain we can glimpse more closely the values toward which we can reach. God is the force in the Universe that gives us hope, that allows us to move forward when we feel like giving up. No matter how many or how few days and weeks and months are left to us, we have the ability to make decisions about how we live, how our lives will look, and what we want to happen before we die. The ability to look beyond pain is one of those precious gifts God gives to us. Even when we are filled with fear, or perhaps especially when we are filled with fear, God walks with us, just as God did when we were infants and young babes in our parents arms. God will be with us always. All we have to do is believe. http://www.yourgriefmatters.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dr._Mel_Glazer http://EzineArticles.com/?Where-Was-God-When-I-Got-Cancer?&id=173990 bad credit school loan

Child Safety Wristbands

By Milos Pesic Why is it that children seem to inherit the skills of the famous Harry Houdini? A few seconds away from your gaze and you realize that they have performed their disappearing act. No wonder some parents resort to putting their children on leashes when they go out. They are not exactly the ones we normally use on our pets. Try tying the leash on your kids neck and youll have the social welfare banging on your door. There are actually those that are attached to a childs wrist to ensure that he doesnt get too far away from mommy. Still, there are parents who think that leashes, regardless where it is attached, sound barbaric. These arent really designed to trample on human rights, but are just created to lessen the incidence of your child getting lost or abducted. Places that are crowded such as parks, shopping centers, zoos, airports, sports venues and the like are the possible settings that your child could get lost in. If you are in the company of more than one child, it is not convenient to use the child leash. Unless you want to get all tangled holding on to those leashes, it would be more advisable to use the child safety wristbands. These do not limit the distance that your child can wander off from you but these can reunite you with them a lot faster in case they are lost. Child safety wristbands, which mostly come in very bright colors, are more than just a fashion statement. These are actually a part of some safety initiatives to assist parents who have lost their children in crowded places. These child safety wristbands contain the parents contact number. This information is essential so that you can be contacted once someone finds your child. The child safety wristbands are basically the simplest and easiest to use among all child safety gadgets, yet one of the most effective. You dont have to hold on to your childs hand all the time while you are in a place swarming with people. Just be sure to educate your child on what to do in case he doesnt see you anywhere near him. Make sure that he knows where to go and who to ask help from in case he feels that he is lost. The child safety wristbands do not totally eliminate the possibility of an abduction or other potential dangers. But they are a faster and less stressful way of being reunited with your lost child once again. The responsibility of ensuring your reunion with your child does not start and end with the child safety wristbands. It is your crucial role to educate your child on how to make the wristbands work best for him. How to Eliminate Belly Fat

By Chris Chenoweth If a womans waistline is larger than 35 inches (40 inches for men), the risk for a variety of health conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes, can greatly increase. Studies show that fat stored around our waist poses a greater health risk than the fat we store in other parts of our bodies. This is just another reason for both men and women to take the necessary steps to reduce unhealthy belly fat. CAUSES OF BELLY FAT Gender and age are the largest determining factors for where we store fat on our bodies. Men tend to store their fat around their waistline when they put on weight. Women, before menopause, store their fat around their hips, thighs, and butt. After menopause, however, the fat becomes thicker around their waistline. Most people eat a diet high in refined sugar and other simple carbohydrates. These foods raise blood sugar levels, leading to high insulin levels. The high insulin levels cause fat to be deposited into the belly area rather than other regions of the body. Put simply, belly fat is largely due to an unhealthy diet. LINK BETWEEN STRESS AND BELLY FAT You exercise faithfully, doing crunches until youre exhausted, diet until you cant stand it anymore and still you hold onto your belly fat. Whats the problem? The problem is that excess abdominal fat can also develop from high stress levels. How can stress cause a fat belly? Fat in the bodys abdominal area acts in a different manner from the fat elsewhere in the body. It has a larger blood supply as well as more receptors for a stress hormone called cortisol. The levels of cortisol fluctuate throughout the day but a higher amount of the hormone is released during periods of stress and remains elevated. The cortisol hones in on the abdominal area because of the large blood supply there, thus encouraging fat to be stored there. Consequently, if you are experiencing stress on a regular basis, your body will continue to deposit fat around your middle. Belly fat is not the only cost of a stressful lifestyle caused by work problems, health problems, family problems, etc. High cortisol levels interfere with dopamine and serotonin, leading to depression and feelings of more stress. To reduce your stress level, try to incorporate stress relievers into your daily life like reading, taking walks, soaking in the tub, listening to relaxing music, etc. Even if you think you do not have the time, you must make the time in order to be healthier physically and mentally. WAYS TO REDUCE BELLY FAT EAT A HEALTHY DIET full of fruits and vegetables and foods that are loaded with omega-3 fats like olive oil, fatty fish, nuts and seeds. The omega-3 fats reduce inflammation in the body and the production of adrenaline, another stress hormone, ultimately resulting in less belly fat. EXERCISE at least 20 minutes a day, preferably using aerobic movements. To help work your ab area, incorporate activities like cross-country skiing or kickboxing into your exercise routine. Be patient. Whittling down that belly fat will take time especially if you have significant fat in that area. Stick to your program, the fat will disappear. In summary, if you have a fat belly, your best solution is to follow a healthy diet program, combined with an aerobic and stomach-toning regimen to tighten your abdominal muscles. Make sure you include stress relievers in your daily life, as well, to help keep the belly fat at bay. Why Weight Training Leads To Fat Burning

By Kurt Hurley Integrating weight training into your regular exercise program can and does assist in fat burning and weight reduction for two significant reasons. The first reason being the muscle fiber type or types that are employed and the second reason is an explicit increase in metabolic rate. Weight training, or as some refer to as strength or resistance training, should be consistently performed at a minimum of 3 times per week. Although a skilled-personal trainer can prescribe a condition-appropriate program for you, as a rule of thumb it is recommended that a minimum of one set per exercise for each major muscle group be performed. Even more effective is the performance of several peak-intensive compound (multi-muscle) exercises. The major muscle groups are the chest, quadriceps, abdominals, hamstrings, low-back, upper back, biceps, triceps, neck and shoulders. Each exercise should consist of about 8-20 repetitions, done in a slow, controlled manner, while emphasizing proper form and joint position. The resistance should fatigue the muscle group near the end of the set. Simply put, the muscle fibers are the fundamental element of the muscle. The three types of muscle fibers are: slow twitch (slow oxidating (SO) or type I), fast twitch (Fast oxidative - glycolyme (FOG) or type IIA) and pure fast twitch (FT or
Type IIB). Slow twitch fibers get most of their energy from fat burning, a process that requires oxygen. This is also fueled by the fibers' ample supply of blood vessels, glycogen, mitochondria (cellular furnaces where fat and nutrients are
burned) and the blood fats inside of various related cells. The pure fast twitch fibers are dissimilar in that they contract rapidly and fatigue easier. These fibers get their energy from burning glycogen. There are fewer mitochondria in the
cells that compose fast twitch fiber; therefore, these fibers burn less fat than slow twitch fibers. Similarly yet distinctively, the fast twitch fibers do also contract rapidly, but sustain a greater level of endurance. This may be because they have more mitochondria than the pure fast twitch fibers, but less than the slow twitch fibers. By far the most remarkable benefit of peak or high intensity weight training (or extended duration aerobics) is that you can change pure fast twitch fibers into regular fast twitch oxidative fibers. This particular variety of high intensity weight training activity increases the amount of mitochondria in the fast twitch fibers to levels much higher than those found in the slow twitch fibers. And as you might have guessed, with more mitochondria present and employable in the muscle cells, more fat is burned. This is the key to weight management. Your metabolism and the rate at which it functions represents the amount of energy you need on a daily basis to sustain your life functions. Even when lounging or sleeping, muscle tissue is very active and can require up to 45 calories per pound per day. Therefore, losing muscle (muscle atrophy) or more
specifically not maintaining muscle results in a decline in your metabolic rate. Subsequently, with less muscle, your body requires less energy. Food (nutrients) once used as energy is now stored as fat. A prudent, long term and consistent weight training program is the greatest contributor to avoiding a decrease in lean muscle mass and overall metabolic rate, as well as metabolic and body systems function diminution. Commencing a regular weight training program can and should take some effort. But no matter what your age or level of conditioning might be, weight training will fuel an abiding lifestyle and add longevity, functionality and vitality to your
life.
