Settlers of Catan Strategy - Part 2 - The Wood-Brick Strategy

By Dan Kozarchuk The Settlers of Catan has been the flagship for German Style Designer Games for many reasons, some of the main ones being its elegant simplicity and its depth of strategy. Your choice of strategies will influence your initial setup and overall game play. The separation of strategies that are outlined in this series is a bit artificial, but it is useful to understand the concepts behind them. In practice, players will use a combination of these strategies during gameplay. This article, the second in this series, will discuss the Wood-Brick Strategy. The Wood-Brick Strategy is a strategy to get a lot of wood and brick early in the game, in order to build settlements and roads fast. A wood/brick port is very useful in this strategy, as finding a way to get ore/grain will be important to build cities for the middle to end game. Lots of people think this strategy is less effective on a small or congested board, as you need room to grow. Actually, it can be more effective, as your increased road building capability gives you the advantage in reaching those limited number of expansion spots first. An ore-grain player's worst nightmare is playing on a congested board with one or two wood-brick players. This strategy naturally lends itself to getting the longest road. For this strategy, it is very important that you build new settlements around open grain and ore hexes, or you will have a very difficult time trying to build cities later on in the game (which can be crucial for a win). Optionally, with your increased settlement production, you can build on a number of ports to get ore and wheat. With your increased road building capability, you should build your roads to cut off other player's expansion. This can help in denying Ore/Grain players from acquiring enough building sites they need to win the game. This leads into the next variant, which takes this to more of an extreme: The "Road Boy" variant works to build roads fast in order to block off other players' expansion. This strategy concentrates on building roads first, rather than on production. Only when you are done blocking people off do you work on getting enough victory points to win the game. This requires a lot of wood and brick, so your first cities should be on these, rather than ore. Trade aggressively for wood and brick, before it's obvious you might be a threat. This is an interesting variant in that it violates my general philosophy of building up production first. It could work better on smaller boards with less people, so you don't miss blocking anyone. The 7 Commandments of Marketing

By Michele Schermerhorn Marketing is the key to success with any business, online or traditional. You can have a website or business location. You can have a great product. However, if no one has heard about your business or your product, you have NOTHING! Marketing is everything you do to promote yourself and your business. Without an aggressive marketing effort, your website is just one of EIGHT BILLION listed on Google. Without an aggressive marketing effort, your store better have a location next to Walmart and hope for their overflow. How do you stand out from the crowd? There are seven (lets call them) commandments for your marketing efforts. Keep these in mind and you are well on your way to creating an effective marketing machine. Remember, there is only one way to score the effectiveness of your marketing efforts SALES! Commandment #1. Use a Rifle NOT a Shotgun Rifles leave a neat, clean hole where you point them. Shotguns scatter shot in the general direction you point them. Most failed marketing efforts are born in a scattered marketing message aimed at the world. Lets say you were trying to sell a snowboard. To effectively sell a snowboard to a fifteen year old requires an entirely different conversation than selling the same item to his mother. Therefore, commandment #1 directs us to segment our possible customers into different groups who share common concerns. If your product could be sold to a fifteen year old or a 40 year old, youd better decide who you are going to focus your marketing efforts upon for the greatest success. Commandment #2. KNOW Thy Customer Like Thyself Following commandment #1, we selected a targeted group of people for our marketing message. Now, we MUST understand that targeted market as well as we know ourselves. We must crawl within their mindset. We must understand what they think about our product, what they want from our product, and the alternatives they have to our product. Customers buy for their reasons, not yours. If you want to sell them your product, you MUST sell to their concerns, not your own. Every piece of marketing copy must FOCUS upon them. If you dont speak their language, you dont get their money. Commandment #3. Be PASSIONATE About Your Company & Your Product Attitude is infectious. If we are around upset people, we begin to take on that attitude ourselves. If we are with positive people, the same phenomenon occurs. Most people like to associate with enthusiastic people. And, most of us like passionate people. If you arent passionate about your company and your product, why should anyone else be?
Commandment #3 means to show passion for your product by speaking and writing about it with enthusiasm. Talk about what your product can help people accomplish in their lives. If you cant work up enthusiasm for your own product or business, find another business or product. Commandment #4. Accept the fact that NO wont kill you In the process of running a business and selling a product, you will hear no more frequently than you hear yes (if youre doing it right). What? By doing it right, we mean you are TRYING things. Some work. Some dont. Whenever you think of a new marketing approach, remember, the worst that can happen is they say no. So, try it! This is not a matter of life or death. This is a great experiment! It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change. - Charles Darwin Commandment #5. Wear a CLOWN SUIT! Its hard to ignore! The cheapest and easiest marketing in the world is free advertising. How do you get free advertising? Wear a clown suit! Do something OUTRAGEOUS! Become news worthy. How? When Ben & Jerrys Ice Cream first tried to expand to a nation-wide operation, it had trouble finding distributors. They determined the problem was that Pillsbury put out the word to all distributors not to work with Ben & Jerrys. Pillsburys edict effectively blocked Ben & Jerrys from the services of the national distributors. What to do? Put on a clown suit! Ben & Jerrys set up a one-man picket line outside Pillsbury headquarters. The picket sign read Whos the Doughboy afraid of? The result? National-wide FREE publicity on television and newspapers. Publicity they couldnt afford to buy. In order to differentiate yourself from the crowd of competitors, you MUST be DIFFERENT! Design your own clown suit and wear it proudly! Commandment #6. NEVER Give Up! Albert Einstein said, Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. In marketing, everything you do moves you forward. If one campaign fails, you are that much closer to the one destined to succeed. Watch others. Learn from others. Learn from your own mistakes. BUT KEEP GOING! Commandment #7. Always Be Closing Always be closing is often referred to as the ABCs of sales. However, it also applies to marketing. The objective of marketing is to increase sales. Not to inform, educate, or entertain. I repeat: The objective of marketing is to increase sales. Therefore, this last commandment directs us to write all marketing copy with the sale in mind. Only information that moves a potential customer toward a sale is allowed in our marketing copy. How do we know what should stay and what should go in our marketing materials? Read through it asking yourself one question So what? Another way of stating so what? is asking why should the customer care? Youve been in business since 1972. So what? Your product folds flat. So what? Youre a family owned business. So what? The alternative? We have been in business since 1972 so youll always know where to find us. In revelation it says that the False Prophet who works with the Anti-Christ will create an image of the beast; that actually speaks and kills anyone that does not worship it. With todays modern technology its not difficult to see how this may happen. The image of the beast may be some kind of holographic image linked to a supercomputer, the holographic image may be an animated impression of the Anti-Christ that talks and performs and people will be forced to worship it. Those who dont worship it will be killed in some way. Revelation 13:16-17

Here in revelation it states that everyone will have to have some kind of mark. The mark is likely to be some kind of microchip under the skin, in many countries throughout the world people are already getting microchips implanted under their skin. A nightclub in Spain implants its VIP members with microchips so they can get discount drinks, also many companies are implanting their employees with chips for security reasons. Movies like Star Wars, Terminator and Star Trek also promote the idea of Human beings integrating themselves with technology. I believe its likely that if people take the mark of the beast chip implants, the implants could somehow be controlled by this super computer that is linked to the hologram image of the beast. If someone doesnt worship the image of the beast its possible the microchip embedded in them could establish they are not worshipping the image, and somehow communicate this to the supercomputer, then the supercomputer could send out some kind of deadly electronic pulse to the persons microchip that causes them to be electrocuted to death. Im not saying this is exactly how it will happen; Im just exploring various plausible theories, because I dont think were ever going to know exactly how this will all pan out until we get there. But its certain from scripture that whoever does not worship this animated image of the beast will be killed by it. The image of the beast will definitely be animated, because it clearly states the image can talk and communicate. Its clear though the Human and technology integration concept is being exhaustively promoted. Mobile phones were just the beginning, people are almost attached to their mobile phones today, and there is all sorts of new gizmo accessories accompanying the mobile phones such as; blue tooth etc. There is much cutting edge scientific ideas in progress at the moment, scientists are now talking about a microchip that can be embedded into a persons skin and it can be used as a mobile phone, and you can move a curser on your computer screen using your brain nerves whilst this chip is embedded under your skin. Scientists are also exploring ideas of transferring a persons memory directly from their brain onto a computer. The human race is really trying to play God with this Human technology integration concept; humans seem to think they can evolve themselves to Godlike status with technology; its almost like their listening to Satans promise that we can be like gods if we integrate ourselves with technology and eat of this knowledge. Satan told Eve in the Garden of Eden that if she ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil you will be like a God (Genesis 3:4). Scientists are trying to tell us that if we integrate ourselves with technology such as implantable microchips we will be like gods, just like Satan promised Eve in the Garden of Eden. With all the sci-fi shows like Star Trek about aliens flying around in spaceships and connecting their minds to technological type devices, who knows what the Anti-Christ forces that control Hollywood are pre-conditioning us for. Maybe they will stage a UFO landing and then get some demon to walk out of the UFO/Spaceship and tell us he can make us like gods. The demon could tell us if we connect our minds to alien/occult type technology, by implanting ourselves with advanced microchips that we could become advanced super human godlike people. If that happened it would be just like in The Garden of Eden when Satan told Eve she could be like a God, if she ate of the tree of knowledge. But remember if Satan arrives in a spaceship to tell us he is here to make us like gods with his technology, remember he wont appear as an ugly demon, he will appear as an angelic being to deceive people. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14) With all the false signs, technological wonders and cleverly devised fables that Satan is preparing, just remember that Jesus Christ is our savior and He died on the cross for our sins. Do not let Satan confuse and deceive you, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is simple and its a free gift from God. Salvation through Jesus Christ is not complicated, you dont need to be super-intelligent, have a college degree or implant yourself with any technological device to be saved. To be saved through Christ and be a Child of God all you need is simple childlike faith, you just need to admit youre a sinner and ask Jesus to come into your life and help you. This shows God is a loving God and gives everyone a chance to have salvation regardless of how intelligent or educated we are. I used to blame myself for others' bad behavior, until I learned the truth of the matter. It was a freeing experience. Here is a summary of years of advice from professionals, who helped me to deal with the effects of abuse suffered in childhood at the hands of an angry and controlling family member. I harbor no ill will against that person, and now am quite sensitive at reading and reacting to difficult people as a result. It is possible to have peace, here are a few ways I use to achieve calm during a "storm". When people you know are really hard on you for no good reason, judging everything you say or do, please realize that it is not your fault that they behave this way. It is their problem, their upbringing and insecurities showing. They may have been mistreated as children, and as a result may harbor deep needs to control things. It's their way of trying to make things "right" in their minds, after past problems they were unable to control. Sad, but true. So, what do you do to deal with someone who targets you for harsh judgment, anger, or control? Do you feel like you are walking on eggshells when around a difficult person? It is a lousy feeling to feel trapped in the radar of someone who is hard to relate to. You say one thing, they say another. Or, you do it your way, and they tell you it's all wrong and needs to be done their way. It can be a blow to your self-esteem to tolerate poor treatment like this on a long-term basis. If you are constantly being told everything you do is wrong, or blamed for things unjustly, how can you feel good about yourself? The best thing to do is to consider the source and don't take anything said to you personally. Don't let the troubled person define you, remember, you define yourself. Quietly know that you are the one in control. Don't argue. The other person wants to affect you, but can't unless you let him. Leave your emotions out of it, just look at the situation for what it is: you are emotionally stronger than the other person. You don't force your will on others, or try to make them do things. You know better. First of all, don't dignify tirades of rudeness or temper tantrums with anger back. Let the offending person own their problems by not letting them engage you in a battle. You don't have to play their game. If you react negatively, they've "won" and will feel even more powerful over you. To keep your power, the best thing to do is put up boundaries, or rules to what you will or won't tolerate. This must be done calmly, and without emotion. To be effective, you must maintain this demeanor, no matter how hard the controller tries to evoke a reaction from you. If they try to make you do something you don't want to do, tell them so and then walk away. Be a broken record, by continuing to repeat yourself calmly if they keep bugging you, if necessary. You owe nobody an explanation so whatever you do, don't explain your reasoning. Just remove yourself from the situation, quietly. Your silence and calmness get the point across. If they follow you and want to continue the discussion, tell them you will talk to them later, and that you are to be left alone until then, then say nothing else. Just separate yourself from the situation and wait until they are more rational and calm if the discussion needs to be continued. Keep emotion out of the conversation by maintaining composure. Remember, you have a voice, and your opinion matters. When dealing with someone who is being aggressive and controlling, you are maintaining control of the situation by not fighting with the person. Your coolness may unnerve and anger your aggressor. They want a reaction from you. Some aggressors will up the ante by threatening, insulting or getting physical. Don't tolerate violence, if you feel like your life is being threatened then leave for awhile. It pays to think ahead during high-tension situations, for safety's sake. Maintain peace by keeping your boundaries and not fighting. Eventually, the aggressor will tire of pushing the issue and back down or go find someone else to hassle. It is possible to co-exist with controlling people but from a distance if at all possible. Have your own opinions, live the life you want to live without apology. If you are picked on, keep cool and maintain your own individuality. It takes a lot of personal energy to defend oneself, so don't. Keep that energy for yourself. Remember, it is your life, nobody else's. Be at peace with yourself and others. I still have relationships with those who try to control me, but I limit my exposure to them. They have been "trained" by my lack of willingness to fight or argue, yet they still try on occaision to rile me up. It doesn't matter to me because I choose not to engage in the conflict. I believe in myself and won't surrender my personal power to anyone. Be positive and believe in yourself. Your opinions and thoughts are important and they do count, so don't let the critics get you down.
